Stress and Inflammation- How to Manage It Naturally for Better Skin and Health?
Stress is something we all deal with — whether it’s due to work, family, health, or just the pace of modern life. But did you know that chronic stress can actually trigger inflammation in your body?
More and more research now confirms what traditional healing systems have known for centuries: stress and inflammation are deeply connected, and they can impact not only your immune system and digestion, but also your skin health.
At Natural Skin Clinic in Parnell, Auckland, we see this every day — clients with skin concerns like eczema, psoriasis, acne, or rosacea often have one thing in common: high levels of unaddressed stress.
So the question is: how do we manage stress naturally and effectively?
As a holistic skin and wellness specialist, here are three natural approaches I’ve recommended to my clients (and practiced myself) for over 17 years.
1. Breathwork — The Power of Conscious Breathing
When most people think of yoga, they think of stretching & postures. But one of yoga’s most healing components is breathwork (Pranayama).
One technique I highly recommend is Anulom Vilom, or alternate nostril breathing. It’s a simple, effective practice that balances the nervous system, reduces cortisol levels (your body’s stress hormone), and brings calm in just a few minutes.
What studies say:
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology and International Journal of Yoga shows that alternate nostril breathing can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and enhance oxygenation — all of which support better skin and immune function.
How to practice: Sit comfortably, gently close one nostril, inhale through the other, then switch nostrils to exhale. Repeat this cycle for 5–10 minutes daily.
2. Grounding — Reconnect with the Earth
Also known as “earthing,” grounding involves direct contact with natural surfaces like grass, soil, or sand. Walking barefoot outside may sound too simple to be true, but it’s a scientifically supported way to reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and even support gut health.
Benefits of grounding include:
- Lower cortisol levels
- Improved sleep
- Reduced pain and inflammation
- Enhanced gut microbiome and immunity
A 2015 review published in the Journal of Inflammation Research highlighted that direct skin contact with the earth may reduce inflammation and improve chronic health issues, including those related to skin.
How to start: Try standing barefoot in your garden or walking on the grass in your local park for just 10–20 minutes a day.
3. Herbs and Homeopathy — Gentle, Holistic Healing
Herbal teas like chamomile can have calming effects on the body and mind. Chamomile tea is known to support digestion, reduce stress, and improve sleep — all important when you’re trying to calm inflammation from within.
In homeopathy, stress-related symptoms are addressed using individualized remedies. Remedies like Sulphur, Graphites, and Ignatia may help with skin flare-ups triggered by emotional stress — but the key is constitutional prescribing, which considers your entire emotional and physical profile.
Why work with a qualified homeopath?
Because healing is personal. A remedy that works for one person may not work for another. That’s why a consultation is essential to find what’s right for you.
The Bottom Line: Stress Management is Essential for Skin & Overall Health
Managing stress naturally is not just about feeling calm — it’s about reducing chronic inflammation that affects your skin, gut, joints, and immune system. Breathwork, grounding, and holistic healing tools like homeopathy are simple but powerful practices that can support your healing journey.
And remember — healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. If you’re struggling with stress-related skin concerns or chronic inflammation, it’s best to get personalized guidance.
